Unlike traditional types of slip agents, Javachem?SP is compatible with polyolefin material
China's packaging industry is the second biggest in the world, with continuously growing demand. According to statistics from the China Packaging Federation, the total revenue of large-scale enterprises in the packaging industry reached 1,204.18 billion RMB in 2021 and the year-on-year growth rate was 16.4%.
With the rapid development of packaging industry in China, the total demand for plastic films has increased, especially the growing emphasis on high-quality plastic film packaging materials. There are many types of films used in flexible packaging, of which, energy-saving and environmentally friendly BOPP film plays an irreplaceable role.

Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene (BOPP) film is a high-quality transparent flexible packaging material. It is produced by extruding polypropylene pellets into sheet, then stretched in both the machine and transverse directions.BOPP film exhibits several advantages, including high physical and mechanical strength, lightweight, non-toxicity, moisture resistance, wider applications and stable performance.
According to its intended use, BOPP film can be categorized into heat-sealable film, label film, matte film, standard film and capacitor film.
During the processing or molding of packaging materials, friction inevitably occurs between the materials and the equipment or between the products themselves. Due to friction, the flowability is decreased which increasing energy consumption, causing surface roughness and loss of gloss, thus negatively impacting on the molding and processing of many plastics.
In addition, fillers such as calcium carbonate, talc, and diatomite are widely used, which become a new challenge to plastic processing and product quality, affecting the smoothness and surface gloss of the finished products. To address these issues, it is particularly important to research and develop slip agents.
Traditional slip agent is polymerized based on fatty acid amides, including primary amides, secondary amides, and bisamides. Organic waxes like erucamide are widely used for BOPP films due to excellent slip performance, improving the efficiency of packaging production.
However, this kind of slip agent is particularly sensitive to temperature. At high temperatures around 60°C, the coefficient of friction between the film and steel or between films can increase by 0.5 to 1 times, which can easily lead to packaging defects during the processing of high-speed film packaging. In addition, some issues are caused by amide-based slip agents.
●Over time, more and more amide-based slip agents migrate to the film surface and accumulate, leading to the reduction in film transparency, thereby affecting the appearance quality of the packaging material.
●During film winding and storage, the amide-based slip agent may migrate from the surface layer to the corona layer, which can impact the quality of downstream printing on the film.
●For food packaging, the migration of amide-based slip agent to the surface may cause dissolution into the food, thus affecting the flavor and increasing the risk of food contamination.
Javachem®SP provides a permanent slip solution for polyolefin films.
Javachem®SP is a silicon-based slipping agent containing special functional groups, which isspecially used for polyolefin films. With a small addition, Javachem®SP can significantly decrease the surface frictioncoefficient of the films, imparting polyolefin films with long-lasting and excellent slipperformance.non-migration, no precipitation, improved processing stability, more environmental protection and safety.

with polyolefin materials and hasexcellent thermal stability, imparting polyolefin films with long-lasting and excellent slipperformance. With a small addition, Javachem®SP can significantly decrease the surface frictioncoefficient of the films, and effectively reduce the defects caused by amide slipping agent in theapplication such as the wide variation of COF, easy exudation and inferior thermal stability.

Javachem®SP maintains stable COF value even at higher temperatures, ensuring the stability and reliability of film and packaging processing. Meanwhile, it keeps long-lasting optical properties of films with no effect on subsequent processes such as printing and metallizing. It is widely used for polyolefin films such as CPP, BOPP, LDPE, and LLDPE.
Working principle

First stage: After co-extrusion of amide and polyolefins, they are randomly distributed in the core layer of the film.
Second stage: Part of amide migrates to the skin layer of polyolefins

Blending stage: Blended with polyolefins, silicone is randomly distributed in the polyolefins.
Molding stage: Due to the incompatibility of silicone and polyolefins, the silicone migrates to the surface. Meanwhile, the polyolefin is compatible with the material, forming a stable comb-shaped structure.
Cost analysis

In three-layer co-extruded BOPP films, amide-based slip agent is added to the core layer, while Javachem®SP is added to the heat-sealing layer.

In terms of overall dosage, Javachem®SP is significantly lower than erucamide. Compared to the current higher price of erucamide, Javachem®SP can save at least 50% in costs.
COF comparison (Film to Steel)

From the comparison results, Javachem®SP maintains the stable COF at different temperatures.
Heat stability comparison

From the comparison results, it is clear that Javachem®SP has very low volatility under the processing temperature, while amide exhibits significant volatility and inferior thermal stability.

Javachem® has been dedicated to developing new silicone materials for years and providing more sustainable solutions for plastic compounding industry.‘Surface kungfu’ creates a better life!
